My first 2 submissions

Posted by vithyavu-music at 03:35 AM on August 12, 2009

These first two pieces of music I've posted were actually supposed to be part of the same hypothetical game I thought of.  I had just about finished the opening theme when I got an idea to do a faster pace variation.  I changed the rhythm around a little bit to fit the mood a little more, but instantly got a weird feeling.  I felt like I had heard it somewhere, but decided to continue on anyways.  It wasn't until I had nearly finished the second piece that I had a sudden memory of a certain Italian plumber, and realized where the feeling had come from.  I did a quick search on youtube and my assumptions were right.  When I had changed my first theme, it turned out to be the exact same theme from Super Mario Galaxy!  Well I thought it fit too well to change it, so I decided to dedicate it to Mr Mario himself, and his composer, Koji Kondo.

(edit)

And to further incriminate myself more, I'll post a link to the Super Mario Galaxy title theme here.

It was all innocent coincidence......honest.

Where do you get your musical ideas and feelings? I think music is very hard to make it sound special. It can sound cool and great but to make it unique and different from others is very challenging. There are so many kinds of music going on around the world. Maybe it's impossible to listen to everything but you can get a lot of advantages from them and express those in your own unique style. But personally, I like your version of Super Mario Galaxy! So keep up the good work!! (=

Thanks for your feedback Mark. I agree that it is very hard to find your own unique style in music. Music has been around and evolving for thousands of years, so even if you think you've done something original, most likely someone has probably had that idea before. I get my musical ideas by listening to various orchestral works, mostly starting from the romantic age. As for my feelings.....music is one of the biggest outputs of my emotions. Also, I try to get myself into the mood of the piece that I am writing. For example, for "The Center of the Universe", I try to imagine what is the meaning behind the theme, or what would it be like to be in space. Once I have found my own meaning of space, which happens to be a "New Frontier", I can now portray that feeling in the form of music. That is usually how I go about my compositional process, and how I believe I can place my own voice into my music.
